3. Close reading practice. As a class, we annotated a few key sentences at the end of Chapter 6 in order to focus on how author’s word choice and syntax suggests Bilbo’s transformation.
4. Close reading application. Then, students chose their own few sentences from Chapter 6 to annotate on their own and write an analysis paragraph using the ACE-IT formula. I modeled writing one of these paragraphs first with the students’ help. Here is the sheet we used: Hobbit motif writing. Students turned this in by the end of class for a homework grade.
5. Reading Chapter 7. We read the beginning of Chapter 7 together, which students should read on their own for Friday.
HW: Read Chapter 7 of The Hobbit and continue motif annotations.
