Thursday, December 11: Finishing motif annotations and writing assertions! December 11, 2014

1. Students started class by finishing their motif annotations as a group.

2. Next, students wrote an assertion based on the text.

3. Finally, all students presented their work to the class.

HW: Honors: Read Great Expectations through Chapter 19 (“The End of Stage 1 of Pip’s Expectations”) for Monday. This is about 75 pages, so get started!

Standard: Read Great Expectations chapters 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18 (You can skip chapters 12, 16, and 19) by Monday.

Wednesday, December 10: Reading Day December 11, 2014

1. We briefly discussed how to handle difficult vocabulary as we read.

2. Students decided how they would take notes for their “motif logs.” Students must find one passage in each chapter they read, from Ch. 11 to the end of the novel, that’s related to their motif. They must mark the passage, either in their book with pencil, on a sticky note put into the book, or recorded on a sheet of paper. In addition to marking the passage, they should write a short sentence about how it relates to their motif.

3. Silent reading time!

HW: Finish reading through chapter 10 by Thursday.

1. Students completed another annotation exercise!

2. We discussed the contents of Chapters 1-3.

3. Students broke up into their motif groups to find and annotate a passage from the text related to their motifs.

HW: Continue reading! Due date for ending on chapter 10 changed to Thursday.
