  1. Today we took notes on #12 and #13 (in, il, im, ir and in, il, ig, im, ir) and two SAT words (imply, indignation).
  2. We discussed symbolism using this planning sheet W13: Symbolism. Ms. Garvoille did an example planning sheet for the class and then students worked on their own.
  3. Work time on memoirs.

HW: You have a quiz to study for on literary terms and editing marks tomorrow: English Quiz on Thursday. Continue reading your book club memoir, which you need to finish reading by Friday! Continue working on your memoir at home. The full rough draft is due on Monday.

  1. Today we discussed our big goals for the next two weeks: finishing writing our memoirs and finishing reading our book club selections.
  2. Flashback notes. We took notes on W12: Flashback. We also practiced identifying the different parts of a flashback. If you were absent, you can get notes from a friend or Ms. G.
  3. Next, students tried their hand at writing a paragraph of flashback. Here is the assignment: Flashback Scene Assignment.

Today we learned how to give powerful feedback in a writer’s workshop group.

  1. Students met in their groups and filled out their Writer’s Workshop Cover sheet.
  2. We then discussed W10: Memoir Workshop Guidelines.
  3. Next, Ms. Garvoille demoed how to give good feedback by reading her own work.
  4. Finally, students followed the procedures together in their groups.

HW: Make the changes to your memoir in Google Drive suggested by your group by Tuesday.

We met in the classroom to hand back students’ foreshadowing scenes. Then we went to a computer lab to work on writing our memoirs.

HW: Students’ complete memoirs are due on Monday, October 5.

Monday, September 21: Structure in Memoir September 21, 2015

Today was all about structuring our memoirs. We have written lots of scenes, but how will we put them together?

  1. We met in our book clubs to examine our mentor text memoir structures using this sheet: Memoir Structure Homework Sheet (front only).
  2. Students then received W9: Memoir Structures notes and info sheet. We talked over a few of these structures, then students worked on
  3. Students shared out at the board what they answered for #7 and #8.
  4. Finally, we returned to our seats and students chose a structure from W9 that will work for their memoir. On an exit slip, students explained what structure they would use and how it relates to the meaning of their story.

Today we went to the media center and worked on typing our memoirs. Students typed all the drafts they got back and continued writing the sections they hadn’t written yet. It was a very productive day!

At the end of class, we turned in the foreshadowing homework.
