Critical Media Literacy: Book Club Discussion 1 (Tuesday 12/6) December 6, 2016Posted by peprather in Uncategorized.
- We are doing book clubs again! The students are reading from a wonderful selection of books which includes The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexia, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang, Running for Hope written by DPS students with the help of our very own Ms. Garvoille through the John Hope Franklin Scholars program, March by John Lewis, and Maus II by Art Spiegelman. All of the books use images which fits nicely into our critical media literacy unit! Students are learning how to close read images like they do a written text. Also, all of these books, in their individual way, address and dispel stereotypes which is central to our unit.
- We are doing book clubs a little bit differently this time around. Students no longer fill in roll sheets and instead take notes as they read on a piece of notebook paper. We find that this holds students accountable for reading better than assigning individual roles for each section of the book.
- Our second and final book club discussion for this unit is on Tuesday 12/13.
